28th May to 4th June 2021. Just had seven glorious days on ‘Queenie’, went to the Royal Albert dock in Liverpool. Would highly recommend it. Spectacular!! Returned, then on to Barton Swing bridge before mooring up for the last night in Worsley. The boat is more like a private boat not like a hire boat at all. We have a share boat called Shelton now moored in Alvechurch, too far south to enjoy the delights of the north. Will definitely be hiring her again well done Hester on fitting her out in this way. Stuart & Chris (Merseyside, UK). P.S. Can't wait to see Woodstock when completed.
21st to 23rd May 2021. Just a long weekend but still fun! Lovely boat as others have said. Well fitted out and comfy. I managed to get to Lymm before turning around. Moored at Little Bollington and ate at the ‘Swan With Two Nicks’. Meal and beer was very good. Moored by the bridge, you walk under it to get to the pub – lovely views! Watch out for a pesky party boat though, he scraped the boat when I was moored up! Amazing amount of people out jogging, cycling or walking down the ‘Sale straights’. The sun did come out in parts and it was glorious! Would have liked a week or two more – maybe later in the year, who knows? Anyway, great weekend made all the better meeting and chatting with Hester! Thanks for a lovely break! Mike (Yorkshire, UK).
14th to 21st May 2021. What a lovely boat! Loved the fixed bed and comfy mattress and the new kitchen layout (skipper doesn’t get lonely when you go to make the tea!) Went through Wigan and turned left onto the Leeds Liverpool canal. Travelled to Lydiate and turned then up the Rufford branch to Tarleton and back. Ship Inn, Lathom, Rufford Arms Hotel, Old Boathouse Inn Astley and Farmers Arms, Burscough all do great food. We grounded in the entrance to one lock on the Rufford branch as water can get low but this is a really pretty stretch of canal. Walked around Pennington Flash, loads of birds. Lots of quiet mooring places. Saw 2 kingfishers by Rufford Hall. Thanks Hester for a great week, loved it! Jackie & Nigel (East Sussex, UK).
23rd to 26th April 2019. Home from home as usual, very comfortable, even managed some sunshine. Back in August. Chris & Noreen, Margaret & Vincent (Yorkshire, UK).
15th to 18th April 2019. First time on a narrowboat, very tranquil, great weather. Mick soon got the hang of piloting the boat. Boat very comfy and well equipped. Took her to Castlefield a great stopping over point for Manchester city centre. Look forward to coming on the canal again. Mick, Liz, Amy & Izzy (Greater Manchester, UK).
2nd to 5th April 2019. Birthday Celebration. Always wanted to do this so bought it as a surprise for husband’s birthday – he was over-joyed and loved every minute. Thanks to Hester for her great tuition. 'Gloria' was very well equipped, Hester has thought of everything. The bed was so comfy and the cosy fire kept us so warm. Would love to come back in the summer months. We had plenty of rain & hailstones, would have been nice to have a cover to shelter under whilst steering the boat but didn’t let us stop enjoying ourselves, loved the experience, loved 'GLORIA'. Thanks Hester (definitely recommend you and 'Gloria'). P.S. Would recommend the Axe & Cleaver at Dunham and a stop at Lymm (we stayed overnight here). Phil & Sheila (Mersyside, UK).
28th Mar to 1st Apr 2019. Lovely spacious boat. Super comfy, cosy bed. 'Gloria' is easy to handle – she looks lovely in her new paint job. We have enjoyed cruising as far as Lymm, into Castlefield and up to Plank Lane. It’s many years since we’ve cruised the Bridgewater and the amount of building, especially in Manchester is amazing, but it’s nice to see developers are making a feature of the canal instead of turning their backs on it. Luckily we had sunny, dry weather for our break, but there has been a cold wind at times. Thanks Hester, keep up the good work and good luck in expanding your enterprise. Lesley & Glenn (Ceredigion, UK).
29th Dec to 1st Jan - New Years Eve 2018. 'Gloria' you have been amazing! Four first timers to canal cruising and we weren’t disappointed. 'Gloria' was equipped with everything we could have needed for this winter celebration, the coal fire was so cosy! Hester was a wonderful tutor and great at showing us the ropes before we set sail. We’d love to come back for a summer sail soon. Happy New Year, here’s to 2019. Lot’s of love Gemma, Stephen, Becky & Chris (Greater Manchester, UK).
22nd to 26th Oct 2018. Absolutely fantastic, can’t wait to do it again! Tunnels are amazing, great places to stop along the way, great boat. Feel like we have been mariners for years after 3 days. Thank you Hester!! Adrian, Jayne, Sean & Matthew (Greater Manchester, UK).
29th Sept to 6th Oct 2018. Second time out aboard ‘Gloria’ – a great boat. We did the Leeds Liverpool stretch just short of Maghull first time. This trip saw us take the Bridgewater and Trent and Mersey just short of Wheelock. Bridgewater is a good canal for beginners with good moorings in places like Dunham, Lymm, Stockton Heath, Walton and Moore. The 3 tunnels open you up to a whole different boating experience. If you like great woodland walks then Marbury Country park is great. The locks south on the Trent and Mersey are all singles (apart from Big Lock) but quite deep and great locks to try out. Facilities are much better on the Trent and Mersey run by the Canal and River trust charity. Peel Holdings should be ashamed with the lack of water, Elsan and no waste facilities. ‘Gloria’ is a great boat and differs from others with the front cover, the hire time pick up 10am to 10am and (as others have mentioned) the most comfortable bed on any hire boat so far. Nick & Ann (Cheshire, UK).
5th to 15th Sept 2018. Nb ‘Gloria’ is lovely to handle. Quiet, smooth and well equipped. Having done 8 x hireboat holidays before, we like to think we know a bit about the old canal boat holiday (only a bit mind you – there is always a lot to learn and practice). She is warm overnight and the bed is very comfy. We travelled from Boothstown marina and stayed in a lovely rural spot between bridge 26a Bollington Underbridge. A friend recommended The Swan With Two Nicks for a decent pint and food and it didn’t disappoint. We travelled through the 3 x tunnels and went down the Anderton Boat Lift to spend a good few days exploring the River Weaver. The river is lovely, peaceful and with good moorings. The lock keepers who look after the locks and help you through them are friendly and helpful, suggesting places to stay. It’s well worth going right to the end, where Marsh lock is, tie up to the pontoon and to take pictures of the Manchester Ship canal. Winsford is not worth a visit, unless you need provisions. If you are able we would recommend anywhere up to the Salt Piles on Vale Royal. Another bonus was to experience the whole of the Bridgewater canal, wide, clean, deep and easy to navigate. The Runcorn Arm is definitely worth doing, but wind at the Victoria Arm just after bridge 85 as there is more space to do so. We also went into Castlefield basin, passing Manchester United’s football stadium and had lunch at The Wharf. As we made good progress we had to travel right past the marina to Leigh bridge (the end of the Bridgewater canal) through Plank Lane swing bridge, winding after that to return to moor near the lovely new marina. We spent some time walking around Pennington flash. A great trip, thoroughly enjoyed by Beckie & Kevin Delaney (Lancashire, UK).
16th to 19th Aug 2018. A lovely surprise for Bill’s 70th birthday. Cruised down to Lymm where we stayed overnight, then returned via Dunham Massey. Moored in a quiet spot outside Little Bollington then a short walk back across Dunham Town bridge into the deer park. Lunch in The Sawn With Two Nicks and enjoyed an afternoon in the park. A great time with the family on a lovely, comfortable, well-equipped boat (many thanks to Hester!). Congratulations to Skipper David, First Mate Sarah, Deck Hand Bill and Cook Gillian. Wilkinson Family (Cheshire, UK & AU).
30th June to 15th July 2018. Lovely boat, cruised the Rochdale canal (not recommended) and then the Huddersfield Narrow (highly recommended). Lots of locks and a great 2 week break. Sarah (Hertfordshire, UK).
17th to 21st Sept 2018. Our third break aboard ‘Queenie’. We were static this time which allowed us to visit places further from the base. Had a nice day at Tatton Park and Media City, Salford Quays (even managed to be interviewed on the radio!) The weather changed from 21 degrees the first day to 9 degrees the last day but that did not deter us. Hardly noticed the rain with a glass of pinot and a good DVD. Thank you again. Toni & Dave (Cumbria, UK).
7th to 10th Sept 2018. Amazing birthday surprise!!! A little daunted at the prospect initially but Hester’s laid back nature and expert tuition put me right at ease, got the hang of it in no time. Made our way to Lymm with plenty of stop at beautiful spots along the way. Boat is immaculate, it’s been a real pleasure! Love Cat & Scotty (Yorkshire, UK).
13th to 16th Aug 2018. Hello! It’s been our first time ever on a narrowboat and we’ve truly loved it – and with any luck, it won’t be our last! ‘Queenie’ is just dreamy and actually better equipped than some self-catering places we’ve stayed in so 5*****! Some really lovely and thoughtful touches including fairy lights and hot water bottles, and everything is so beautifully clean. We also love the décor and how homely it is. It doesn’t feel like a holiday home but more like a ‘home from home’. Mark and Ruth (London, UK).
26th June to 17th July 2018. Here we are again! It is now exactly 1 year since we finished our first cruise with ‘Queenie’, and already then we had a strong feeling that it would not be the last! So in September last year we decided to book her for 3 weeks this summer to have sufficient time to go to Wales and the Llangollen canal. Unfortunately, we had to make a plan B since the breach of the Shropshire Union canal stopped us from completing our plan A. We have therefore enjoyed one more cruising of the Cheshire Ring, but this time extending our cruise to all the way to Marple Junction and down the Upper Peak Forest canal to Bugsworth Basin. There we met with Hester and Steven and spent a most pleasant and enjoyable evening with them at The Old Hall pub in Chinley. For the first time after 8 years of cruising the English canals (first time in 1993!), we have experienced some problems with the locks. The Bosley locks were closed for 3 days because of severe leaks in the gates and shortage of water, and in the Wheelock flight we became quite nervous when we had to wait 24 hours for a damaged lock to be repaired. But fortunately, we had plenty of time, and the sun has been shining constantly in 3 weeks almost without a drop of rain. Once again we have had the most wonderful canal cruise with ‘Queenie’! Best wishes and thanks from 2 Norwegian friends. Anne & Torgeir (Ottestad, NO).
15th to 30th June 2018. We were pleased to find a hire boat nearer to Liverpool and were not disappointed by the comfortable boat which runs/handles very well. Unfortunately, we did not reach Liverpool this year due to a breach near Melling. (Last year our trip there was delayed due to the rebuilding of Vicars Hall Bridge on the Leigh branch of the Bridgewater canal and in 2014 it was dangerous demolition rubble on a bridge below Stanley lock so were turned back at Hancock's bridge, Aintree.) We cruised westwards along the Bridgewater, then as far as possible on the Leeds & Liverpool westwards, including to Rufford. The second week was very hot and sunny with a cloudless sky, except for some moorland fires. Not the usual hire boat with many personal touches which are very much to our taste and well-cared for. Thanks to Hester for this and for being so helpful. Best wishes Colin, Pauline & Ricky the dog, (Buckinghamshire, UK). PS. Hope to try reaching Liverpool again next year on this lovely boat.
15th to 16th June 2018. Our first time, I booked for my husband's birthday and we absolutely loved it! He was a natural but now wants to buy one!!! We will be back, but next time for longer as I think we have 'the bug'. Thanks for all your help Hester and the lesson, the boat is so lovely and clean, felt really cosy. Lyndsey, Chris & Molly (Leeds, UK).
28th Oct to 4th Nov 2017. We had not been on a narrowboat before - but with Hester's help and support - we set off like two 'old sea dogs'!!! We have really enjoyed the adventure and had a funny, new and amazing trip. Our most memorable part was going along happily until we ventured into 'Ghost Boat Alley'!! Excellent adventure. We will be back. Darren & April (Glossop and Sheffield, UK).
23rd to 27th Oct 2017. There’s definitely a recurring theme in this visitors book: Spotless, comfortable, welcoming 'Queenie'. Helpful, friendly support from a very hardworking Hester. Lovely scenery and friendly people everywhere. This is our second trip on 'Queenie', just as good as the last time. This time we discovered the ‘Old Boat House’ in Astley – really lovely pub and food. Thanks Hester for everything you’ve done for us!! Your old pal Toni & Dave xxx (Cumbria, UK).
11th to 15th Oct 2017. Had an amazing week on 'Gloria'. Got as far as Hancock's Swing Bridge (no. 9) which we hadn't booked ahead (our mistake) but we called and they let us through. Loved Parbold and next time would plan to go to 'The Windmill' for a meal in the evening - really great place and dog friendly. Most of the pubs are good & dog friendly which is great. 'Gloria' was very comfortable and lovely and cosy in the evenings. Thanks Hester & 'Gloria'. Mark, Nicky, and Jasper & Sam (the dogs!), (Oxfordshire, UK).
2nd to 9th Oct 2017. Not many come to Manchester in October for a weeks holiday but St John and I did and all for the 'love' of GLORIA!!! Hester does something unique with her boats and it can't be found anywhere else on any other canal. Looking forward to trying out 'Queenie' in the Summer. Ta Hester. Kate, St John and Jumble (Birmingham, UK).
25th to 30th Sept 2017. From dinner at the ‘Swan With Two Nicks’ to lunch at ‘The Golden Fleece’ and all the way to the Anderton Lift, we have had a great adventure. Especially enjoyed the challenge of the 3 tunnels. What a lot of fun. We would love to come back and do it all again!!! Cheers. Greg, Belinda, Rob and Janette (Sydney, AU).
19th to 21st Sept 2017. Had an amazing 3 days aboard Gloria – had everything we needed for a slow and relaxing few days. Great to have the fire, kept us warm and comfy on the chillier nights. Great break and can recommend the Secret Garden café by Worsley Bridge and from Sale took a tram to Altrincham and look for the indoor food market – Tues to Sunday nights – great communal place to eat. Vonda & Willie Newman (Christchurch, NZ).
10th to 19th Sept 2017. We cruise most years and delighted to find Hester and ‘Gloria’ – only 7 miles from home. A great boat, wonderful facilities with a personal touch. The bed is the best with wonderful bedding. We cruised out to Lydiate and it is an amazing outing through the Douglas valley and out into flat country. Recommend Crooke Inn, The Old Boat House at Astley and The Hop Vine in Burscough, not The Farmers Arms though. Nick & Ann (Cheshire, UK).
8th to 15th Sept 2017. I arrived to find ‘Queenie’ spotless and gleaming in the sun. She was nicer than her pictures and was commented on by passers-by and boaters alike. The trip to Anderton Boat Lift was well worth it despite the awful weather and ‘Queenie’ and I got on famously and had a great time together. Thanks Hester for an awesome boat, great handover and a fantastic experience, I will spread the word back in OZ. Ian Jones (Canberra, AU).
19th Aug to 1st Sept 2017. Boat as comfy as ever - home from home, everything catered for. We were even lucky with the weather (for us). Feel more rested. Thank you Hester. Chris & Noreen Hunt (East Yorkshire, UK).
1st to 15th Aug 2017. Belting holiday, lovely boat, the best bed ever (can I take it home)? Thank you Hester for the loan of your boat. Derek & Joanna Ashcroft (Lancashire, UK).
31st July to 4th August 2017. Fantastic holiday, a real adventure. Many thanks Hester for everything and many thanks Queenie for looking after us. Dave & Janet (Lancashire, UK).
18th to 21st July 2017. Our first attempt at narrowboating and we couldn’t of picked a nicer boat to tryout our novice sailing experience. We boarded with great excitement and under Hester’s wing we were soon off on our adventure. Being novices we decided to cruise to Lymm (no locks). The weather was wonderful and it was such a chilled way to enjoy our 30th wedding anniversary. Queenie, your bed is so comfy. Will definitely book again and try some locks. Thanks Hester. Bob & Gill (Kent, UK).
16th to 22nd July 2017. What an amazing time we had aboard glorious 'Gloria'! She is just perfect in everyway...from the quirky decor to the way she handles! We both loved driving her and watching the world go by at a relaxing pace. Would love to do it again. Thanks for everything Hester. Sam & Adrian (Hampshire, UK).
13th to 16th July 2017. First time on a narrowboat for us, absoltely loved it! Frank set off as a novice and came back with his skipper's hat on! What a beautiful boat, we will be back. Anne & Frank Kilbride (Greater Manchester, UK).
8th to 13th July 2017. A lovely first experience for us on a narrowboat. What a great way to spend 5 days of our summer holidays. Thanks for everything Hester. Paul, Nicola, Becky & Logan (Shetland, UK).
2nd to 17th July 2017. After having cruised and explored parts of the Great Union, the Oxford, Coventry and Ashby canals previous summers we decided that it was time to try something new this year. We spent several hours behind the pc searching for hire boat companies in the Manchester area, and quite soon we found a small company called Star Narrowboat Holidays that caught our attention. A telephone call and a few emails later we decided to go for Hester and Queenie this year. And today after 2 wonderful and exciting weeks on Queenie cruising most of the Cheshire Ring - to Macclesfield and back - we certainly do not regret our decision!! Queenie is a great boat both to handle and to live in - well equipped and taken care of. She certainly does not look at all like a typical hire boat - and that’s a compliment! We have been asked several times if she belongs to us - unfortunately, our response has to be negative, but nevertheless we have received many nice comments on her behalf. So thank you Hester for our new and in every way pleasant acquaintance with you and Queenie! You should not exclude the possibility of seeing us again. Best wishes and thanks from two Norwegian boaters Anne &Torgeir (Ottestad, NO).
21st to 24th May 2017. Excellent few days aboard 'Gloria'. Trev & Trev (Lancashire, UK).
18th May to 1st June 2017. We had an amazing time cruising the Cheshire Ring in a leisurely 2 weeks. We got soaked and sunburnt and Queenie gave us a hot stove to warm up to, or a sundeck to enjoy an ice cold beer in the evening. The Peak Forest canal was beautiful and tranquil all the way to Bugsworth Basin, we even managed to go for a walk in the Peak District (by train from New Mills). Doing the Macclesfield and Trent and Mersey locks in brilliant sunshine and 25C gave us a nice tan :) Lovely canals! Definitely worth it to climb up to the White Nancy in Bollington for some amazing views of the Manchester valley. Visited the Lion Salt Works museum and the Anderton Boat Lift for some historic background - well recommended. The Bridgewater canal slowly brought us back into civilisation. We loved the Queenie, such a comfy boat with loads of space, by far the best hire boat we have ever been on. Thanks Hester for a fab holiday :) Saskia & Aajen (Enkhuizen, NL).
17th to 20th May 2017. Great short break aboard Gloria. Best equipped, most comfortable boat we've hired. Sue, Lyn, Paul & Bob (Yorkshire, UK).
2nd to 9th May 2017. Hester has given us such a lovely clean boat, the bed is so wide that it makes for a better nights sleep - most beds on the boats we have had were quite narrow. 'Gloria' had everything we needed for our holiday and the boat handled very well. I recommend the Runcorn Arm, had lunch in the Ten Lock Flight, a new place to eat and opposite the theatre. Travelled to Croxton Flash (Bridge 175) on the Trent and Mersey. We have had a great time. Brian and Pat (Hertfordshire, UK).
27th to 30th April 2017. First time and what an amazing experience. Booked by my boyfriend (now fiance) for a weekend away. Thanks so much for such a great time on 'Queenie'. Tip: Bridge Inn - great food and cocktails. Hannah & Lewis (County Durham, UK).
18th to 21st April 2017. First time on a narrowboat, but definitely not the last. Wonderful time on the best boat on the canal. Thanks Hester. DJ & Dad (Lancashire, UK).

Very much enjoyed taking Queenie on her first cruise around the Cheshire ring – such varied scenery, particularly the locks around Marple, Bosley and Middlewich were stunning – if not very hard (and rewarding) work! As for Queenie herself, she was a delightful home-from-home, and we will miss her delicate puttering engine in the background and the scenery moving past whilst doing the washing up. Chris & Wilco (London, UK). P.S. Thanks Hester & Jim for your help on the Rochdale 9!)

11th - 12th May 2013. We hired 'Gloria' for my Dad's 60th Birthday. Had a lovely day cruising to Lymm and even enjoyed some sunshine after the driving rain had passed! The boat was everything you could need - we enjoyed cooking a full English breakfast on the stove and kept nice and cosy with the fire going. We will definitely be coming back for another stay on 'Gloria', hopefully soon and look forward to exploring the other canals. Thank you Hester, see you soon. Clare and Felipe (Manchester, UK), Mike and Margaret (St Anne's, UK), plus Paul and Claire (day visitors) xxxx.
8th - 10th May 2013. Thank you very much Hester! 'Gloria' was a great adventure, hope we took good care of her for you. All the best Stuart. Donna, Jimbob and Rocky xxx (Bolton, UK).

10th - 12th April 2013. Belle & Sonny said that Gloria was the best boat in the world and that Grandad was the best canal boat driver in the world but Grandad said he likes the peace and quiet. 16th - 21st February 2013. Lovely well-kitted out boat, with more than a personal touch about her, unlike so many hire boats these days.
